Nikon D5000 and sb800 as master mounted on hotshoe?

I just recently purchased a Nikon sb800, to act as a master to my sb600. I know the d5000 does not have wireless capability, but I'm find with having the sb800 on the camera body to act as a master to the sb600.
but I'm confused on how to get this to work. I feel like i'm missing something.
I have set the sb800 in master mode, and have set the sb600 in slave/remote (since it is the only function the sb600 is capable of)
But I'm still not getting the 800 to fire the 600. What am I doing wrong?

I didn't know the SB800 could function as a master.

At any rate. You have to set the SB600 into remote slave (it can't act as a master - I know that for sure), and set both flashes to the same Channel (1-4) and same Group (A-C).

And find out where the sensors are on the camreas (I can't remember where it is exactly on the SB600), and make sure they are pointing towards each other more-or-less as they need to be line-of-sight. This may require you to rotate the flash heads a bit, but that is OK - that is why the heads rotate.
