It is a good dSLR camera

In fact one of my colleagues uses it to shoot sports. Of course the lenses he uses cost over $6, 000 each, but the camera does the job, good enough to produce marketable images used by sports magazines, newspapers and internet media outlets.

What it does have that no other dSLR has is a CCD sensor, so the camera can sync with flash at shutter speeds over 1/500th second. Only the old Canon 1D (original) can do the same.

The D40 has long been discontinued and replaced by the D3100.

Now repeat this 100 times: "It isn't the camera its the photographer."

In 40 years I have never owned a camera that took good pictures.

In 40 years I have never owned a camera that took bad pictures.

However, in 40 years I have used a camera to make some darned good pictures and I have used a camera to make some darned bad pictures. The camera gets neither the credit nor the blame. Its all on me.

What the camera produces is completely dependent on your ability as a photographer. If you have no knowledge of Light, Composition and Exposure then whatever camera you use will give you about the same results.

Once you have the knowledge of Light, Composition and Exposure and the skill to use that knowledge then you can use just about any camera available to make professional pictures.

It's a good camera just like other dSLR's. It can be used to produce great looking photos. If you are able to sell those photos, you are a professional.

No actually, it can't. It pretty much just sits there until someone who knows how to use it comes along. And then maybe, if the person is skilled enough, a professional picture might result.

Cameras don't produce professional pictures.

Buying a DSLR does not guarantee your images will be any good.
