Nikon D40 6.1 Mp - Best lenses to have?

Hi, I'm trying to get into photography and just bought a Nikon D40 6.1 mp camera on ebay, but it is body only. I do a lot of macro and landscape shooting. I also like to take a lot of pictures of people and friends at parties and such.

What are the must-have lenses for these type things? I'm trying to find them on the cheaper side though, I'm not trying to buy a $1000 lens or anything. Any help or advice you could give me, would be great, thanks for your help!

For landscapes, you need a wide-angle lens. Choose some from the Nikon website under the "Wide Zoom" category (link below), then narrow it down to which ones fit under your budget.

Ditto for the macro lenses:

The kit lenses are actually very sharp and economical. People upgrade for various reasons, but they are still quite good. You can probably find used 18-55mm VR and 55-200mm VR lenses in very good condition. Even brand new, the price won't be bad. There's the inconvenience of swapping lenses faily often, and the D40 lacks dust reduction. The 18-105mm has good versatility and very good sharpness. It has some chromatic aberration, and the D40's processor does not correct for it like the D90 and later CMOS Nikon DSLR's.

AF-S 85MM DX MICRO NIKKOR for your macro shots and portrait.
AF-S 35MM F1.8 DX for you parties and landscape.
AF-S 55~300MM DX for wildlife and outdoor sports activities

And be careful in buying lens, the D40 could not auto focus none AF-S lenses.

Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens is an all-around great lens. While it is not "the best" lens available for any single role, it stays mounted on my D90 a large majority of the time. When I don't want to haul around a bag full of gear, this is the lens I take without a thinking twice. Clearly, Nikon had to make some tough choices in balancing the features of this lens, trying to satisfy a wide range of users and applications. Here is my take on where they ended up.
