Nikon D3100 Tips Please?

Ok well, I have the Nikon D3100. My brother is a DJ and i want to photograph him, so people can see how he looks live. We play in pitch black nights with DJ lighting and also he has his computer light hitting his face. So ide use flash, but i want to know what settings could help to make a beautiful picture! Thank you! Leave links for tips or whatever.best answer if you explain it nicely!

One thing you could do is set up a tripod next to his.table? Or whatever he DJ's at. Have him hold still for a good amount of time and take his picture, without flash. Set the ISO low to get a nice- non-noisy shot, open up the aperture, and set the shutter speed accordingly. You may want to over expose, and you may even want to underexpose depending on the situation.
I don't know how much light you have, but you will have to play around with it regardless.

Try taking your pictures on the bulb setting. The instructions on how to set it should be in the manual.
It'll light the pictures, as well as make your brother look like a bad***.
Here's an example of what a "bulb" picture looks
Yeah, not the best example.
But the basic idea is that you could outline your brother in light, while having your camera in the longest exposure setting, thus lighting up him and what he's doing, but making it still look dark. Therefore, he looks awesome.

If the only lens you have is the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 zoom that came with the camera and the only flash you have is the pop-up one built into your camera you're going to have a difficult time achieving what you want.
Ideally, you'd have a small flash unit that can be triggered remotely positioned (out of camera range) to provide illumination on your brother's face while allowing you to also capture the ambient light on stage. This would require buying the Nikon SB-700 flash unit and a wireless remote to fire the flash. "Hot Shoe Diaries" by Joe McNally would really explain this idea better.
If buying equipment isn't possible about your only other choice is to crank up the ISO to 3200 or 6400 and shoot in NEF (RAW) + Fine JPEG, have the camera's Noise Reduction circuitry "ON" and then use an editing program to make any white balance corrections on your brother's face. A program like Noise Ninja will also help with noise.
