Nikon D3100, Should I purchase a 50mm or 35mm f/1.8G AF-S lens?

I have had my Nikon D3100 with the original kit lens 18-55mm for about a year and want to purchase another lens. I feel my pictures lack quality sometimes so maybe you could also offer me some advise on how to shoot better photos with that lens on my d3100. However, I mostly am just completely tied on whether to go with the 50mm or the 35mm lens. I do love the bokeh effect the 50mm would offer but I think the 35mm might give me more range than just portraiture. Please give me some help!
I'm really interested in being able to shoot some wedding photography, so if that would determine which one I should get let me know!

Shooting "better photos" is usually a lighting issue, not a lens issue. Learn about lighting. It is difficult to master. 35mm prime is a good all around lens on the D3100. 50mm is better for portraits, but not so good for casual shooting. A fun experiment, use blue masking tape and tape your zoom ring to 35mm on your kit lens. Shoot at 35mm for some time. Then, change the focal length to 50mm and shoot at 50mm for awhile. See which focal length you like better.

If you get a 50mm prime, be sure it's the AF-S model ($220). There's a inexpensive ($125) 50mm lens which is AF which means it won't auto-focus on your camera.
