NIKON D3100 built in flash won't pop up?

My built in flash won't pop up when i want to take a picture but flash itself is working. When i press the button to take a picture flash goes off but doesn't pop up. After I open it manually with my finger it smells like something is burning.

It only opens on certain settings. Read the manual. Put it on auto and try to take a photo indoors. It should pop up.

If it smells like something is burning, then stop using it immediately and take it to get repaired before you destroy your whole camera.
