Nikon auto focus motor?
I have a Nikon D80 with a defective auto focus motor. Is it feasible to get this repaired, and at what typical cost?
The cost of repair for a Nikon D80 would almost certainly be more than the replacement cost. So you have two options. Either a total upgrade, or, if you are sure it's just the in body motor you could try an AF-S lens (of course that depends on how many lenses you have)!
You do not need the on-board auto-focus motor if you use any of the Nikkor AF-S lenses
Upgrading to a D90, may be a better recourse depending upon the cost of repairing the auto-focus motor on your D80
The D80 is not worth a great deal, in good condition £200-250, with a broken AF motor, it's probably going to cost more to repair than it's worth. However a D80 with broken autofocus motor is still a functional camera.
The D80 was a decent camera. I would ask Nikon how much it would cost to repair. You probably won't get a reliable estimate on here. If it's under £150 it's probably worth doing as a new body is going to cost you quite a bit more, even for another second hand D80.
Just how many lenses do you have which need the AF motor? If it's only one or two, how much difference in price would it cost to buy AF-S equivalents? That would give you the option of using cheaper bodies like the D5100 in the future.
