My Nikon D3100 isn't wroking

I have a Nikon D3100 DSLR Camera and recently, the dial to change modes on top stopped corresponding with the mode that appears on the monitor. By this I mean, when I switch the dial to Macro Mode, on screen it shows Sports Mode, yet when I change the dial to Sports Mode, it displays Sports mode. This makes certain modes unable to access on my camera. I have never dropped it and I haven't even had it for a year. I purchased it in November of 2011 from Costco and I did not sign up for the insurance on it. I've already tried taking out the battery and changing the Shooting Options(Single Shot, Multi Shot, etc.). My camera is my life and I can't afford to buy a new one. Please Help. Please! I cried when I found that it wasn't working. It really means a lot to me.

Added (1). Note: The battery is fully charged, and even on other modes it flips out.

Have you recharged the battery? I don't know about the D3100, but I have found that with the D60, when the charge gets down to a certain level, instead of just telling you it's getting low it acts sort of passive aggressive.
Another possibility could be to reset to the defaults. Somewhere in the camera something may have been set that is incompatible with the Macro Mode. I personally prefer to use A or M rather than scene modes.

Sounds like a manufacturer's defect. You are still under warranty, so best thing to do would be to go down to costco, present them with the camera and ask them to fix/replace it

or you could send it in to Nikon directly to get fixed. All the phone numbers and contact information should be in your camera manual.

No need to worry, you shouldn't need to pay anything since it wasn't your fault.

from your additional details, I'd say that your dial is messed up and contacts are hitting where they shouldn't be.

either way, my original answer still stands. Call nikon or costco and they should take care of the problem without you paying anything.
