My Nikkor 18-55mm lens won't zoom past 50mm

I recently purchased (last month) a Nikon D5100 and an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens, however, the 18-55mm just does not zoom past about 50mm! This has just happened today when I came to use it again! I haven't bashed it or dropped it and its kept in its protective bag when i'm not using it. It usually goes to 55mm no problem, just this morning I came to use it and its not zooming to 55mm! I have just contacted the company i bought it off, do i send it back to them or back to nikon for a repair!

can anyone help me and/or has anyone else had this problem?

It appears that you live in the UK. If so, then you're covered by the Sale Of Goods Act; just contact the retailer and insist upon a refund or a replacement. They can then decide for themselves whether they want to get it repaired for resale or to just return it back to their supplier for a refund.

You are not obliged under the Act to accept a repair, and the retailer may try to fob you off to the manufacturer but you are within your rights to insist that the retailer sets matters right for you.

If you haven't received a reply, best to wait a few more days, some larger stores have special arrangements with manufacturers. If you haven't heard from the retailer within a couple of weeks, you should telephone Nikon UK with your enquiry. Official Nikon imports all come with a one year warranty.
