My new Nikon D7000 will not let me change the scene modes

I just got the new Nikon D7000, and i love it.but, i'm trying to change the scene modes (portrait, landscape, night portrait, etc.), and it won't let me. It says to switch the dial to scene, then scroll through them using the dial scroll, but it won't show up on the screen.
can anyone help me? Why is it not letting me?

I have never used a camera with scene modes, I just use the cameras light meter and use it to provide me with the proper exposure.

So easy! This is looking from the back of the camera and it is turned on.
Just set the dial on the top left of the body to SCENE, push the take picture button down half way, and then use the wheel on the upper right area of the backside of the camera.
The live view will kick on also with examples of use.

I have found that I need to put the camera on Live View to set the scene. If it can be done while looking in the view finder, I haven't been able to do it.
