My camera shuts off right after I put in a memory card?

I have a nikon d3000. I know I'm using the right memory card because I've used it with this camera before. I don't know what's going on. Where can I take it to get checked out. Best buy?

The camera was on when you inserted the memory card? Throw away the memory card. That's damaged already. Just hope and pray the camera isn't. Buy a new memory card. Every time you intend to remove or replace the memory card, turn the camera off. Before you turn off the camera, make sure the read-write access light is off. That's one that blinks right after you take a shot.

I have a Nikon similar to yours, the d5000. Never had a problem like yours. So here goes anyway.

Are you sure the camera is shutting off? See if the LCD will turn on. Try to take a picture.

Since you used the card before with no problem, then most likely the problem is not the card. If you have never deleted pictures from the card, it might be full - I don't know what the camera would do then. Probably you would have got a message if there was a problem with the card. Make sure you are inserting the card correctly. Try again with another card.

Is the battery charged? Try another charged battery if you have a spare.

If you have an optional A/C adapter, try that.

Still a problem, look in the Table of Contents in the beginning section of your User's Manual to find Troubleshooting. It's amazing how many things can mess you up, because of the camera's complexity.

You could try Best Buy, or a real specialty camera store - when they are not busy. Call Nikon support. If you go anywhere for help, take your camera, battery(s), card(s), and User's Manual. Your receipt should be handy in case you need to prove purchase date under warranty to get a repair.
