I'm a dentist and I need advice regarding camera gear for Macro Photographs of patients- before -after pictures.

Canon 60D
EF-S 60mm Macro lens
Ringlite MR-14EX

vs

Nikon D7000
AF-S DX 60 mm
R1 Remote kit

is the gear sufficient for macro?

Maybe but they are gonna have to open pretty wide to show your handywork on their molars!

As well as getting the lens up close you need to get light in there and up close a DSLR and lens creates a BIG shadow. Have you seen the diameter of the ring-light? Up close with a 60mm you will be illuminating chin and eyeballs.

You may be better off going for the 100mm macro as this will allow a bit more distance between you and the subject to leave room to get some light in from the ring light.

The camera body is less important than the lens. I would have thought that an entry level DSLR (Nikon D3200 or Canon T3 (aka EOS1100D) would be well up to the job.

They are practically identical, camera and lens, but I would go for the one with a ring light. You can get the Nikon set up too and buy a ring light for it separately.

At the dental office where I had an implant done (first incisor) they used Canon with a ringlight. I don't remember the exact model or focal length. I don't know whether they could have just as well chosen Nikon.
