The Nikkor AF-S 60 mm f/2.8 is a very reasonably priced Macro lens.

A macro lens is a very specialized lens. It is a special flat field lens capable of shooting calibrated subject to image ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. This is what makes macro lenses cost more than a standard prime lens of a similar focal length.

If you just want to shoot closeups, then you need to look at some extension tubes. They will shoot nice closeups but with out the macro precision needed by scientists and medical media / forensic photographers.

Here is a link to such tubes.

The Nikkor 40mm f/2.8 Micro lens is I believe the cheapest Micro/Macro lens Nikon makes and it's quite good.

Check out Nikon 60mm f/2.8G this is the sharpest lens I've ever used. I was using a 17-55 2.8 for a while and this blows it away in terms of sharpness and bokeh. I'm using it on a dx body so it acts like a short tele which is really nice for portraits.
