Nikon SLR Cameras

Looking to upgrade to SLR, I'm between T2i & Nikon D3100?

Ok, so I've been working with a Canon SX30, and it's been great for the most part but I want to upgrade to an SLR camera.

I'm not trying to be a photographer or anything, but I need high quality video and pictures to cover events and film interviews for my website, MissLs.net. Usually I'm able to bring someone from my team who does have a higher quality camera, but that isn't always possible and I want to always be prepared.

Would appreciate some input!

I'm going to use a lot for video, and I did like the external mic capabilities with the Canon, however I know the D3100 has great color quality and is a little bit cheaper.

Added (1). UPDATE:

I thank everyone for their input, thought I'd explain a little further. I have weighed out pretty much every detail of the pros and cons of both, so I'm really looking for a solid answer of which one to get from an experienced stand point. I really am having trouble deciding. The one thing that has been holding me back is that the T2i has an external mic input, where as the Nikon doesn't. Then again, it costs 1-200 more. I will also be shooting in low light settings on many occasions.

If you are wanting to do video, get a video camera. They will beat any DSLR at video. For $900 you can get a really nice prosumer Canon video camera

First off, I own a Canon T2i. I previously owned a Canon Xsi which I sold to a classmate of mine last semester. Price wise, the D3100 is a really good buy. It does take hi-def video and I love how the toggle switch is on the back of camera that allows you to instantly switch between live view and normal display view. On the Canon t2i, you have a scroll toggle at the top of camera near the shutter button that you have to turn to before shooting.

However, being that this is going to be your first DSLR, I find that the Canon Rebel series (T2i, XSi, T3i, T3, XS etc.) were easier to learn on.

The one thing that the Nikon has over the Canon is that in the video mode for these models, The Nikon allows you to auto-focus while shooting video. The Canon T2i is unable to do that. You have to manually adjust the video as you shoot.

If your going to be shooting a lot of movement and action, it's a little different shooting with a SLR because you have to focus and refocus as your zooming in and out the action. It's a technique that you just have to get good at. However, if your using it for sitdown interviews or just small film work that doesn't require a lot of action, both of these cameras would be a solid choice.

Preferably, I like Canon much more because I'm already used to the controls and how the interface feels. I can easily use a Nikon just as well but I'd have to get used to it's settings before I can begin with it. It really comes down to what your comfortable using. Try passing by a local electronics area and play with the cameras a little bit to see what's more in your comfort zone. Typically, a camera that your comfortable using, your more likely to re-use it over and over again. That's how most people become brand loyal towards things.

Bottom line, both of these cameras will make great choices. I wouldn't get too uptight with the specs since they both are fairly similar in their respected class. Just know what you feel is comfortable for you to use. Hope this helps!

I agree with Bruce except that you actually can Auto-focus while shooting video (it is in the setting menu). My favorite is that Canon and I have no regrets getting it!
