I have a Nikon D3000 and i'm wanting to get a telephoto lens, but can't afford it right now. So I was wanting to know if anyone knew of any great knock off brands what will work with nikon.

Tamron & Sigma. Sigma do a 100-400 whoa!

Get a 2x teleconverter also. With that puppy you'll be able to see the man in the moon.

Probably a tripod too if you don't want your pictures to be blurred.

The Nikkor 55-300 mm will be a good addition to what you have now and it is the lowest cost long len at this time (under $400)

Other telephoto lenses like the popular 18-200 mm costs just over $800 and the costs go up from there.

200-400 mm f/4, over $6, 000

300 mm f/2.8, nearly $7, 000

400 mm f/2.8, just under $10, 000

As you can see, the nice 55-300 mm may just be the ticket

How much telephoto do you need? The Nikon 55-200mm VR will give you good value for the money. Nikon makes a good 70-300mm VR that is expensive, and a cheap 70-300mm that is a waste of money. As you get to longer focal lengths a tripod will become more important.

I have seen refurbished Nikon 55-200mm AF-S telephoto lenses for $150.

Whatever lens you get, make sure it has it's own focusing motor; AF-S i the case of Nikon, HSM in the case of Sigma, or for Tamron, you will have to read the description to see if it has an internal focus motor or not (some do, some don't).

Since your camera doesn't have it's own focus motor, it can only autofocus with lenses having a focus motor.

Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 AF APO DG OS HSM Telephoto Zoom Lens has exceed all expectations and has become my favorite lens for shooting daytime sports. Each and every photo I've taken is tack sharp at all focal lengths. There's no perfect lens on the market today, but this one comes pretty darn close! I would highly recommend this lens to anyone involved in sports or nature photography.
