Hello… I'm looking to buy additional lenses for my nikon d3100: telephoto and macro. For the telephoto lens, I'm thinking about getting a 55-200 mm lens and a teleconverter (x2).It is important that this lens have some sort of VR or stabilization, as I do not want to be a constant slave to the tripod. Any suggestions? I have heard sigma and tamron make more affordable, compatible lenses… Which might you specifically recommend? LIkewise, what might be a good macro option for me? So… I would really appreciate suggestions for the best quality/price of
1.a telephoto lens compatible w nikon d3100 (perhaps 55-200 mm) with VR or other stabilization
2.a teleconverter compatible with that to increase focal length
3.a macro lens compatible with nikon d3100, also with stabilization of some sort.

These lenses are compatible with your D3100:

AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6G IF-ED

AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G ED VR II

Before buying a teleconverter, check this Nikon teleconverter/lens compatibility chart:

Any consumer telezoom and a TC means you will effectively lose any autofocus capabilities. Nikon's AF system doesn't function reliably if the minimum aperture is less than f5.6

1. Nikon's 55-200VR is a steal at the current prices. No 3rd party offering comes close. If you want more reach there's also the new 55-300. If you want build quality there's the 70-300 VR. Sigma has a motorized version of it's 70-300 APO which isn't too bad.
2.It's not going to happen really. If you want a lot of reach sigma's 150-500 is the most affordable option,. (here's my writeup of that lens http://wijnands.blogspot.com/2010/12/sigma-150-500mm-f5-6.html )
3. Most affordable stabilized macro lens will be the 85mm f3.5 from nikon.

I bought the nikon d3100 and it came with the 18-55mm lens. I decided to go up to the 55-200mm lens and the pictures that i have taken with this lens is just amazing.super clean and easy to focus. I keep switching from indoor use with the 18-55mm to the 55-200mm out door lens but the one that stays on my cam 90% of the time is this lens.well worth the money i paid for it but i recommend ever one to get the 18-200mm lens at one time in there life not only is it 4x better but you would never have to take it off unless you want to put on the 35mm lens or a lens that goes up to 300mm and more.

1. Telephoto lens with stabilization. You already named it, the Nikkor 55-200mm VR offers the best value and is a very good performer for the money (and in absolute terms as well). There's also the Nikkor 55-300mm VR if you're willing to spend more.

2. Teleconverter. Don't even bother. Teleconverters are usually meant to be used with super high-quality telephoto lenses that costs in the thousands. If you use a 2x converter with a 55-200mm or 55-300mm lens, quality will be poor and the lens may not autofocus. Besides, the cheapest one is a Nikon 1.4x converter that will cost you $300; not worth it.

3. Macro lenses. It really all comes down to how much you have to spend, since almost all dedicated macro lenses have superb image quality. If you can live without autofocus and stabalization, you'll pay a lot less. The Sigma 50mm f/2.8 is the cheapest macro lens available: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...EX_DG.html

The Nikkor 85mm f/3.5 macro is the cheapest lens with both autofocus and stabalization: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...IKKOR.html
