Is there any software that can be used to remotly controll my nikon d3100 with my laptop?

I want to be able to control the shutter/aperture etc from my laptop and also have a preview of the viewfinder onscreen. I have seen this done by others but don't know how to do it myself or if it is possible with a d3100

What you wish to do is called tethering. I believe that you can tether a D3100 for photos, but not for video. You don't say if your laptop is PC or Mac. This may help:
