Is the Nikon D70 6.1Mp a good camera?

I took some photos in Majorca with my D70 and a friend printed some on his printer that could print A3 size. The result was a perfect production of said photo even though it has only 6.1 Mps unlike some of the later dslr's. All my photos have turned out great but a 1gb card is all you need as this camera does not like bigger ones.
Yes, Its a very good camera

I think that it could definitley use more megapixels

By today's standards the D70 is a bit dated. It was the first DSLR I bought. I gave it to my son when I bought a D90.

Unless you are making 16x20 enlargements, you won't notice the 6MP limitation.

MegaPixels on DSLRs are different than on Compact Cameras. The sensors are larger and while the resolution may not be as good as a compact camera with a 12Mp sensor, the superior optics and low-light quality more than make up for it.

Maybe. But if you are thinking of making a purchase be forewarned that Nikon's customer service sucks. If you have one or get one, NEVER send it to Nikon service; have it repaired locally. I don't recommend Nikon (anymore).

It depends on what you plan to be doing with it. The D70 is quite a special camera, which still holds it's place for pros in certain applications.

The D70 is an advanced level camera built with all the care you'd expect for a superior product. For example it has an AF motor to use with older lenses. It also has twin control dials, a pentaprism finder and a wireless CLS commander and is the cheapest camera money can by that gives you wireless TTL flash.

So the D70 may have an older image processor and a relatively low resolution sensor, however it my far compensates by bringing important functions to the party.

The D70 is a good camera.

Not fast, not brilliant AF, but then it is an oldie these days.

With a good lens, and with the ISO kept lower than 800 you'll get good images.

If you are buying one, pay no more than £150 in good nick with lens.

The D100 is a little bit better in some regards, such as AF, same chip.

Yes it is - and a good starter DSLR for those on a budget. It has a lot of features that the entry level new DSLR's are lacking - principle among these is a focus motor in the body, which means that the D70 will autofocus with a much wider range of lenses than a newer entry level Nikon.

It also has the ability to control flash wirelessly off camera from the in camera menu (a feature lacking on the basic entry level cameras - and some more advanced Nikons - the D100 for example doesn't have it.)

Don't worry about it being 6MP - don't buy into the hype that more megapixels means better images - sensor size is important. You will be able to produce good sized prints (A3 or so) with that resolution.
