Is the Nikon D3100 a worthy replacement for my elderly Nikon D40?
I have a Nikon D40 and they are still fetch quite good money on eBay, I figured that if I hang on to it for another 12 Months it will be worth next to nothing. I was looking at the New Nikon D3100. They have come down a bit in price since there launch (about 9 Months ago)
Cheers
Actually it would be a better idea to upgrade your D40 entry level camera to the more advanced Nikon D7000. If you need to save more pennies, do that and continue enjoying your fine D40 until that time.
If the D7000 would extend your camera budget too far, then look at the Nikon D5100 as an alternative.
I'd rather look at a D7000. I looked at a D3100 and wasn't really impressed with how it felt.
You shouldn't worry about how much your camera is worth, but how well it works and fills your current needs. I have a Nikon F3-HP I bought back in 1990 I'm still happy with.
You should look for d90. Which is also cheap nowadays
entry level lacks many feature. Its time for you to taste more advance dslr
IT could be but it may not be your best choice. Ask yourself what that D40 is not doing for youi
Is there something specifically the D3100 can do that the D40 can't, which you feel like you need?
I can think of HD video, and better low light performance. That's about it, if neither of these are necessary then I don't see the point in getting a D3100.
The D90 and D7000 both offer a lot more in terms of added performance. You may find that these cameras are a real upgrade.
