The D3000 was a major mistake by Nikon. Although intended to replace the D40, the D3000 was released when consumers were expecting a DSLR to have video capability and Live View - and the D3000 has neither. Nikon quickly replaced it with the D3100 with those features. Now the D3100 is on the way out, replaced by the D3200. Right now you can get good deals on the D3100 so its one you should consider.

I'm afraid I'm going to disagree with the above.

I've always seen Live View as a great way to drain your batteries, and video as an unnecessary complication which has no place in a serious camera.

If you know how to use a viewfinder and just want to take photos, the D3000 is exactly what you're looking for - go for it.

Hi. I'm not the most knowledgeable about photography, so I'll start with that. My best friend has a D3000 and LOVES IT. I've taken pictures on it and also love it. I think that as far as DSLR's go, this one definitively wins for it's variety of features and ease of use.

Pro's: Easy to use, great quality, great feel and size

Cons: Pictures look much better on a computer than on the LCD screen, relatively expensive

I would definitively recommend this camera if you want a DSLR. But I think you should do some more research and find out if you really want a DSLR or not. If you don't, I can recommend some really great bridge cameras. Bring cameras are high end, bigger, digital-compact-point and and shoot- cameras. They're perfect for someone who really wants exceptional quality and\or more freedom than a compact camera, but can't afford or don't want a DSLR.

Let me know what you decide.

It's good enough as long as you understand that's it's an old model and does not autofocus with some AF lenses out there.
