Is the NIKKOR 16-85mm any good?

I have a Nikon D3100 and am planning to buy the replacement to the D7000 in the future. Is this lens any good compared to the kit 18-105?

You gain 2mm on the wide end (may be significant in tight spaces) but lose on 20mm in the tele end (you shouldn't miss it though). Technically, since it has a shorter zoom range, it may be better optically. What you do with it and how good the pictures come out will be the final say.

Both are pretty sharp through their ranges. The 16-85mm has some barrel distortion at 16mm but it straightens up pretty well by 18mm with very little distortion through the rest of the range. The 18-105 has more barrel distortion at the wide end and more pincushion at the longer end.
Although the 16-85mm has less telephoto, making it probably not as good a one-and-only lens, it complements a 55-200, 55-300, or 70-300 very well.
