Is the Canon 550D good for film?

I bought a Nikon D3100 as my first SLR but I'm not very impressed with the video quality as it's only 12MP. I really want the Canon 7D because it films nicely but I think it's better off to go with the Canon 550D and buy a nice lens. Is there much difference between the video quality of the 7D to the 550D? Or they basically the same?

No. This camera doesn't do film it does video recording. Film takes film cameras in either 16mm or 35mm film stock and is way more expensive than the 550D.

If you want improved video quality, buy a video camera - although the Sony SLTs are better for video than any SLR.

And no, the 550D's no better than your Nikon - video on these things is more of a selling-point than an actual capability.

If you are not impressed with your fine D3100 when it shoots video, then you will NOT be impressed with any other dSLR All HD video uses 1 mp of your sensors pixels, in Full HD, only 2 mp.

If you want a camera the shoots brilliant stills, then the Nikon D3200 was the camera you should have purchased.

What will affect your video the most is the script you write, how you set up the lighting of each scene you shoot than the dSLR you use. There are ONLY two dSLR cameras at this time that may be able to shoot almost as well as a real video camera only because they can shoot uncompressed video and those two cameras are the Nikon D800 or D4.

Well, full HD video only uses 2MP of the sensor. Higher MP count does not = better image quality. For recording video, you should buy an actual video camera/camcorder. Despite popular belief DSLRs are not replacements for actual camcorders and do NOT offer better video quality than actual camcorders. If DSLRs are better than camcorders, don't you think camcorders would out of production? Hmm, but guess what, they're still being produced. DSLRs are designed to take stills; their manufacturers have added video features to them so uninformed people buy them to record videos.

The video quality of the 550d is equal to that of the canon 7d.

in my opinion the panasonic gh2 with one of the driftwood hacks offers the best video quality of anything at that price point. Pick up the panasonic 20mm pancake or the 25mm voigtlander and you'll be good to go.
