Is my new Nikon lens compatible with an old Nikon N2000 film camera?
I'm thinking about purchasing a N2000 35mm SLR Film Nikon camera for my photography class. The only thing is that it does not include a lens. I have a Nikon D5100 and have the standard lens that came with it. So does anyone know if my new lens will work on the old camera? I've been reading about a different mount that might prevent me from doing this, or the lack of a mount ring, so is there a way to purchase something that it would work with? Any information you have would really help me out!
I have a Nikon N2000, and love the solid metal construction of the body. But be aware that your current kit 18-55mm and any other DX lens will mount on that camera, but will suffer from serious vignetting (dark edges), as the 35mm film size is much larger than the DX sensor size of your digital camera. Because your 18-55 is a G lens, it doesn't have an aperture ring, so you could only use the lens in P (Program) exposure mode.
Unfortunately, the lens with your D5100 will not work properly with any film camera (except possibly the Advanced Photo System Pronea SLRs… Which are junk). Its coverage is too small.
You can however spend just over $100 and get a 50mm AF D lens that will work with the N2000 or a little more and get a 50mm AF S G lens that will somewhat work on the N2000 and work great on your D5100.
It will mount but your digital lens won't fill up the whole film frame in your N2000. What will come out is a tiny picture with large dark fuzzy borders. The lens of the N2000 should work without problems on your D5000 as long as you know exactly what your are doing.
