Is it best to turn the autofocus button to manual before turning the camera off?
I have a new Nikon d7000 with the 18-105mm kit lens. I thought I read somewhere that you need to change the buttons on the lens and camera to manual focus before turning off the camera or it could damage the camera. Is this true?
Also I'm new at this and really don't want to damage the camera so I was wondering if these autofocus/manual buttons need to be switched in any particular way. Such as the camera's button first then the lens, or the opposite way around. Can the camera be on when switching the focus buttons or does it have to be off?
I have never heard of such a thing. Don't worry about it.
I never have. But one thing I try to do is to leave the camera set on ISO 400 and Program mode. Just in case I see Elvis or Bigfoot and I want a shot in a hurry.
Not on newer cameras (i.e the last 20 years.)
Older cameras in which the focus motor was located in the camera sometimes needed to have autofocus turned off when the camera was stored.
I've had the D7000 for 2 years now and have never turned it to autofocus and my lens and camera are fine.
Hope this helps!
Although the popular answer is no, I always do. There's still a mechanical linkage between the ring and motor.
