Well its an ok camera… But if i where you i might go with a rebel canon 18 mp… More bang for your buck… But if your on a tight budget go with the nikon… I know people that use canon/olympus/panasonic/sony /canon. They all love there cameras… So its up to you… Does it feel good in your hand… Is it comfortable when you hold it… Do you have friends that have nikon so you could trade lenses ect… Many things you need to think of before you buy… I love my canons… I have a few… They do what i want them to do and i'm happy.lots of second hand lenses out there

It is a fine camera, but a little dated.

The replacement, D3100 has some features that you may find helpful as a beginner when it comes to using fully adjustable cameras like the D3000 or better

The D3100 has a User Guide Mode that can help the new user enjoy their camera faster.

When Nikon introduced the D3000 to replace the outdated D40 they made several silly mistakes. NO Live View, NO video capability and the CCD sensor left over from the D60. Since in today's DSLR market Live View, Video capability and a CMOS sensor are "must haves" Nikon quickly dropped the D3000 and replaced it with the D3100 that has the features the D3000 lacked.

If Live View, Video and good performance at high ISO settings aren't important to you then you should be able to find a bargain on a D3000.

In my opinion you'd be smart to look at what Pentax and Sony have to offer at about the same price-point of the D3100. Compare the Sony A35 and Pentax K-r to the D3100. You might be surprised to learn how much more camera you can buy for about the same money.
