Is a nikon d3000 good?

Well i was on the nikon site, and it seems as if its the cheapest on there and i don't have enough money for the d90, which i want. Does anyone know of a good nikon dslr camera thats affordable? Ranging 200-400 ish? If not nikon then a cannon, but prefferable a nikon please. And please just tell me a series number that goes cheap, because my parents usually don't let me buy online.

Based on my research i think Canon Rebel XS is way better and has more quality

If you're looking for current Nikon models, the D3000 will be your cheapest DSLR. If you are on such a limited budget, id suggest looking at some of the "transition" models, such as the P100 or P7000, which provide more control and better performance for those looking to move up from point and shoot models but not sure if they need/want a DSLR yet. If you go for a dslr (D3000, etc) you will also have to buy lenses to go with the body, which depending on what you need will add up to at least the price of the camera body very quickly. The nice thing about the transition models is that the zoom lens is included/forever attached, so you don't have to spend extra money on those.
An alternative would be looking at some of the older Nikon models, such as (used) D40, D40s, D60, D70, D80. The D90 is an excellent model as well if you can afford it, its price will be dropping soon as its replacement has just been released and the holidays are here… For reference, i'm selling my used D60 for around $400 with a kit 18-55mm lens.

If you're looking for Nikon, go for Nikon D3000, it's the cheapest. If you want Canon, then EOS Rebel XS. I personally prefer Rebel XS over Nikon D3000.
