In what situations would I use a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens?

I want this camera, but I wanna know when to use the specific lenses. Do you think it is a good camera for a beginner? Is it a good price?

The 18-55 mm lens covers wide angle to medium telephoto. For shooting landscapes, architectural, groups, full body shots as well as head and shoulder portraits. When you start reaching out to sports, action and some wildlife, the 55-200 mm becomes the lens of choice.

And to put some reality in tobasco's view of the world.

#1: Yes it's slow. It is also very sharp and very affordably.
#2: Once again, it's slow but sharp.
These two are sub 200 euro lenses, the 18-55 is only 80 euros. You get what you pay for. I've shot extremely sharp images with these in good light.

#3: Now tobasco is getting near reality, the d3000 is a bit noisy in dark situations at high iso.

Having said that… I would advice anyone looking at the d3000 to see if they can find the money for a d3100, lot more modern camera. I also advice people to start with the 18-55 and gain some experience with that before spending more money on lenses.

You use them until you have learned to use the camera properly… And know what specialist lenses you'll need…

hone your photographic skills…

if you can't take decent photos with the kit lenses, then you have no chance with any others…

The current 18-55 is not really that bad. Also, Pop Photo rated the 55-200 fairly well, calling it a "steal."

The D3100 is a better choice than the D3000, mainly for the sensor as mentioned above.

The 18-55 is a wide angle to normal zoom. The 55-200mm is a normal to telephoto zoom.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the 18-55 kit lenses. Sure they're cheap, but they are entirely usable.
