Having similar concerns, I went with the D5000.It has more functionality than the D3000, although it costs a little more, and almost as many functions as the D90, but for a lot less money. Very happy with my choice.

Of the current entry level Nikon's you missed the best of them, the Nikon D3100

The Nikon D90 is a step above and it might be prudent to wait until mid-October and look at its upgrade, the Nikon D7000.

A video shot with the D7000 you may enjoy

Any of the cameras you listed can produce amazing high quality photos. That however is up to you to produce them.

If you plan on using it for videos, get one that does that. I think they are all good - you will never be disappointed with Nikon. I have a D70s that I use professionally.

Depends on your budget
Low budget: Nikon D3100 or D5000 (around $700 for body + 18-55 lens)
Mid range: D7000 (around $1200 for body only)
High end: D700 (around $2400 for body only)

I recommend you to read the links provided in following page:

Without a single doubt I recommend the D90.It's a solid camera with an exceptional good
picture quality. I'm camera salesman and it's one of our most sold camera's because in it's
price-range it's simply the best.

A camera doesn't come with 'amazing quality photos'. They are made by the photographer, it doesn't matter what hardware is used.

Part of your question is that you want a camera with amazing photo qualities. I'd like to know your definition of what's amazing? Crisp clear shots I've taken with a 6 megapixel super zoom Sony a couple of years ago. Like, I should get the Nikon D3000, D5000, or D90? Are you well versed in settings such as ISO settings, apertures, shutter speeds. You want decent grade DSLRS but if you don't know the basics of photography, you'll be back at this Website asking, now what settings do I set camera at.
Oh, yes you Can leave camera on auto.
