I'm planning a trip to another country and i'm planning to take lots of pictures. I have a nikon d5000 and 2 lenses that came with it 18-55 and 55-200, honestly i'm sick of using them (probably because i don't know how to use them properly) What's a good lens for general use? Ill be taking alot of pictures of beaches, streets, building, and crowds of people in city. My budget is 100-300 bucks… 400 is pushing it. I was going to buy a 100 dollar lens (50mm 1.8) but appearently it doesn't AF with my camera. I'm no where close to a pro photography, not even amateur so any lessons of lenses are welcome. I bought these e-bay lenses for like 50 bucks hoping to satisfy my urge take wide lens pictures… But not very satisfying.

i've been flickring though some pages and this dude has some cool pics using tamron 10-24
and also i've been looking at some 35mm adn 50mm 1.4 but i don't like the fact that it stays at 50mm its kinda too close

Getting another lens won't really help you to learn much… What you need is a class or workshop on how to use your current lens to their fullest.

Btw, what's to get sick about the 18-55mm?
Yes, it's not that grand of a lens, and yes, it's not that much of a telephoto, but you can still get some decent wide-angle shots. Here are some photos that I have taken with that lens:

And the 55-200mm is a "good enough" telephoto lens for beginners. If you are "not even amateur" you need to learn how to master a lens first, before quitting and moving on to another lens, as you will then just do the same thing… Get board of it.

As a travel photographer and ex sales person who has had people come home from trips with bad experiences here is my view. Now is NOT the time to change camera lenses. Use what you have they are just fine. Spend the money on another battery, memory cards and a light mono pod to use as a walking stick/camera support. These will let you keep taking lots of photos, support your camera in light that is just not so good and that will get you better images. The more you use the mono pod the sharper the images.

I'm just back from a trip and the one thing I did not use as much as I should have and could have was the mono pod and some of the images are not usable due to my being lazy just a few hours over the 8 day trip. Live and learn from my exp. ** Yes a tripod is better if your willing to carry and use it.***
