How would the Nikon D5000 look with a 50mm F1.8?

If i was out at the park and it was very sunny, would the lens take some good focus photos.
I'm planning to get the 55-200mm f4-5.6 for my birthday in October for sports, but for now how is the 50mm f1.8?
And I'm barely a beginner and starting things out so don't want to go for anything expensive

The 50mm lens would be good for thoughtful pics in the park, but naturally it will give a slightly narrow view, excellent for portraits. The 'normal' focal length lens for a DX-size sensor as in the D5000 is around 30mm. The F1.8 max aperture will enable pics in poor light without raising the ISO too far.

If you're barely a beginner why not do something really weird? Actually learn to use what you own

The pictures in the right focus well that takes experiences, time and you knowing the lens and the camera. Using the right settings to get it just right so if at first it is a bit iffy you kinda need to find out what method works the best. But once you find out how sure it will give you great pictures.

Sports with F4/F5, 6… You do know that you need to stop down many lenses right. So to get it sharp you might have to use F8 at 200mm. That is very very slow for a DSLR. No that is a nice consumer grade lens that is nice for slower shots but definitely not sports. For sport you need a wider aperture for quick focussing! With a 55-200mm you can go hunt for birds it is slow for that but with the ISO high enough you still get some half decent shots. To get the good shots think about a 70-200mm F2, 8 and those are expensive. For sport that would at least retain a good focusing speed!

Go for the 50mm F1, 8.It is a good way to get into Primes and learn about them. It will give you nice sharp pictures are F2, 2-F2, 5 so it is great for inside the house.

The 55-200mm, it just is not very quick for sport, it is usable but slow. If you want a relative cheap lens that really can help your photography think about an Tamron 17-50 or 28-75 F2, 8. They are both around $400 but with F2, 8 over the full zoom range they are delicious.

In the end the kitlens you have is already pretty nice and can get you some great results. Yes you will want to replace it one day I agree but it isn't a bad lens. It is just slow that is all.

I ended up buying that cheap tammy 28-75. Yeah not really wide, but I love the F2, 8 over the full range. That is such a joy to work with and from around F3, 5/F4 it gets darn sharp.

The 50mm on the D5000 will have an "effective" focal length of 85mm, not 30mm ( you have to multiply by the crop factor).

If you go with the 50mm 1/f.8, make sure to get the "G" version. This is more expensive than the AF version, but it is the only one that will autofocus on your camera.

You can probably buy the 55-200mm for around the same price as the G. But it won't have the low light ability of the 50mm.

Just depends on what your needs are… Choose wisely.
