How to use spot-metering while selecting a manual focus point?

I'm new to DSLRs and own a Nikon D5100. I'm trying to figure out how to use my the spot metering feature, which I prefer over matrix and center-weighted, while still using the manual focus. Manual focus requires me to select a point to focus on (out of 11 dots), but spot metering also requires manual selection of a point for determining light. Can someone help me?

After setting metering to spot (I don't know with your camera but I have the impression spot should always be center), change focus point to single, center (that should solve your dilemma). Now all you have to do now is focus on your subject at the center of the viewfinder, press the shutter release button halfway to get a spot reading on your subject and while still pressing the button, re-frame if needed (you can position your subject on either side if you follow the Rule of Thirds) then shoot.
