How to use remote settings on SB700 nikon flash?

I just got this flash and I was reading in the book about remote settings; however, I do not know how to set that on the flash and my nikon d3000 about how to set the settings on both to get it to work.

The D3000 doesn't support CLS, thus, can't use the flash remotely unless you get a commander unit for your camera (Nikon SU-800).

If you want to use the flash off camera, your options are:
1. Use a remote cord (see the back of your flash manual). Nikon makes a few different cords and you can find third party cords for 1/3 the price at Adorama. Get a cheap TTL remote cord and you can extend the length of the cord if you're handy with simple electronics.

2. Use a RF flash trigger like a Pocket Wizard. There are cheap Chinese remotes for under $100, but you need to modify them to make them work more reliably.

3. The SU-800, as discussed above.

The D3000 does support CLS, it just doesn't support it remotely. You have to use it on the camera for CLS to work. The SB700 can however control other CLS flashes as it can be used as a master (but only if it is on the camera).

The only two options you have are using a remote cable such as the SC-29 or a SU-800 on the camera. The SC-29 is 9ft long, so unless you need a longer distance, it is your best bet for an off-camera flash.

While you can also use pocket wizards or other remote triggers, unless you buy the $500 pocket wizards, you have to use the flash in manual mode. A lot of people still like manual mode, but you have to also use the camera in manual mode, and it does take a bit more to setup the flash for every shot.

As has been pointed out, the D3000 does not have Nikon's AWL/CLS capability for triggering flashes remotely from the camera.

You can use the flash in TTL mode on camera or in manual mode.

The SB700 does however have an optical slave mode (SU-4) so you could use your onboard flash (pop-up) to optically trigger the SB700 without buying any other equipment. You'd have to set the flash power output manually though as I don't believe it does TTL (auto flash) in SU-4 mode.

Alternatively, if you don't want your onboard flash to contribute to the exposure, then a set of radio triggers could be used. I recommend RF602's (about £18 a set). You do NOT have to modify cheap triggers to get them to work! You would have to set the power output on the flash manually (as with optical slave mode) - and the camera would have to be in P, A, S, or M mode (it doesn't have to be in manual, as AWBoater says)

The only way to fire this flash off camera with TTL control with your camera would be via the Nikon TTL sync cord (SC-29) or the additional SU-800 commander unit on camera.
