How to use my Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight on my Nikon D3000 camera?

I'm new to flash photography and I just bought a Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight. I have a Nikon D3000 camera and I'm not sure how to sync them both. I don't want to use my cameras internal flash to trigger my SB-700. How do use my SB-700 without using my pop up flash.

If you don't want to use your cam's pop up flash then you need to buy additional wireless flash trigger compatible with Nikon flashes

Time to get out that instruction book that came with your camera and the one that came with your flash unit. The on camera flash can be set to trigger the 700 when the flash is set to off camera mode. All of that info is IN THE BOOKS…

Slide the SB-700 onto the hotshoe mount… And turn it on if you don't want to use the pop-up flash. If you want to use off camera flash you can't use your pop-up flash in commander mode as Nikon didn't include that function on the D3000, even with your SB-700 in SU-4 mode your flash will fire at the wrong time due to preflashes from your pop-up. You'll need to either buy a wireless trigger (your best bet) or use another flash mounted on the body in commander mode.
