How to take photos at a concert with little light?
A photographer i was looking at did a gig, and the lighting was so dull, i was just wondering how this worked? He didn't use a tripod, as he was moving around too quick! Is there a lens that is suitable for this? If so what is it?
I have the Nikon d90!
:)
Probably had a fast lens (f1.8 or so) wide open & the ISO ramped up. Plenty of fast lenses about in various focal length ranges - f1.2, f1.4 f1.8 & f2.8 would all be considered to be 'fast'.
FWIW I use 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8 and 24-70mm f2.8 on a D300.
Hey D90an sssup! Fellow D90an here… So where were we…
See you can do is have shots levelled at around ISO 1600… Even though 2000 or 3200 are also ok sometimes.
Next if you can then get the 70-200mm VR2 f/2.8 lens. Even though its a bit costly, still its worth it. I love it…
Check out some concert pics ('Prodigy' the band) using a D90 using a 70-200VR f/2.8 lens… Check the exif data, u'll get an idea…
Fast Lens + High ISO, + denoise in post processing.
Very high ISO, a very fast lens and clean it up later with Adobe Lightroom
An important point to note is that you need to expose for the light quality on the subject ( on the stage ) not the light quality where the camera is located. In my case I used a Nikon Coolpix P5000 last year at a Moody Blues concert and set it at 400ASA with exposures at 1/15 at f5.3 and was able to blow the images upto 10 x 8, so it doesn't need a "professional" camera to obtain suitable results.
If you have the D90 I would suggest a fast (f2.8 ) medium zoom ( 35-70 mm ) and rate the D90 at 800 ASA and see how this works; do NOT however use a flash as (a) the drop-off means it will probably be ineffective (b) the light will upset those on the stage and (c) it will draw attention to your use of a camera in a restricted zone.
