If by indoor action, you mean something like basketball, I think you'll find it is a very difficult environment in which to shoot.
I shoot some basketball and I'm normally at around ISO 4000, F2.8 and 1/500 second. And I'm shooting in some decent high school gyms. I also shoot RAW as I usually have to lighten up some of the photos.
If you are shooting in a grade school, or a gym not as well equipped, it will be difficult.
Hard to answer your generic question, but like the other person, I assume you mean something like basketball, and I also assume you don't have a lens faster than F3.5, which will really make it tough. You're gonna need to bump up the ISO lots and still have more post processing to do to brighten it. Your best bet is to shoot in RAW like the other person said. That way, you will lose the least quality with PP. And check your metering and WB as usual.
Sorry I forgot to mention, if you have something faster than F3.5, use it to allow yourself more stops of light to improve image quality.
