How to fix brightness error on nikon d5100?

Added (1). I have had this camera for a long time, but it was broken accidentally a while ago. I sent it to Nikon to be fixed. I haven't used it much until now. Every picture that I take outdoors with auto is too white. You can't even see the what's in the picture. Unless I go somewhere hidden from the sun light the pictures still come out too white. I know I can fix this by using changing the settings manually, but most times I just like to use auto. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Check that you don't have the exposure compensation on first.

See that number line in the viewfinder? Roll the wheel to bring it to zero.

This is probably due to Exposure Compensation. There are two ways to set it on the D5100 as explained on pages 71 and 72 of your manual. Maybe the quickest is to press the +- button and rotate the command dial. You want a setting of 0.
