According to imovie, the video format from the nikon d3100 is not compatible. I'm using MPEG Streamclip, how exactly should I convert the video to make it work?

Don't take it hard to yourself with some freaky programs. I prefer 4 videosoft video converter.
I'ts super simple and has not problem with it and all the video formats.

The video format recorded from nikon is mov.

Usually, iMovie did work with.mov files.

However, iMovie only supports the MOV movie file whose video codec is DV, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, or AIC. If a.mov video contains an incompatible video codec, the file will either not import into iMovie or will exhibit playback issues after import. In this case, you may need to convert the video file to iMovie compatible video format.

The following will introduce a step by step guide on How to Solve iMovie Won't Import MOV Problem
