How much does it cost to get the shutter fixed on a nikon d40?

I have a Nikon D-40 some how something happened with the shutter. When you go to take a picture it says "Problem with the shutter" It has never been dropped or anything. What do you think is wrong with it and how much do you think it costs to fix it?

It might very well cost more to have repaired than the value of the camera.

We don't know unless one of us has had it done. I'd check with Canon to see if they can fix it for you.
Do you have the shutter count on the camera? Are you sure the shutter needs to be replaced or is it some other problem?

I have a D40 as well. I think first I'd try removing and replacing the battery and make sure it is charged up as well. If the menu will let you go through it, you might remove the lens and try the mirror lock up to see if the mirror flips up and the shutter opens and stays open. If it doesn't do one or either, then I'd say it's definitely a problem with the shutter. If it does lock up and open the shutter, then you might go through the menu to the reset the factory settings option. If still nothing, then it's time to contact Nikon or a Nikon dealer.

The shutter is either worn out, or maybe it is dirty. Take the lens off and look in the body. If you see any thing that doesn't belong there, try to very carefully remove it. Taking it to a qualified camera repair shop may be worth the $60 to $120 for them to look at it.
