How good is the Sony Alpha A380?

I'm hoping some actual experience…
and maybe some compare it with the Nikon D5000 and Olympus E-620.

Most of us can't afford to buy two or three different brands and models of cameras to have first hand information

However there are some things you could find out if you do some research.

1) The "best" Nikon entry level dSLR is the D3100 at this time
2) Olympus cameras have smaller sensors than other brands
3) Sony has fewer lenses than Nikon and Canon systems. Olympus has even fewer and NO legacy lenses
4) Sony uses a non-ISO hot shoe, so buying generic flash units can become problematic

Could not find a listing for a A380 (here is a link to the A390)

Fotoace is in one of his rude arrogant moods - why does he bother?

your best bet is to goto dpreview and see if there's a comparasion there

Very good actually the Sony Alpha A380L 14.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization and 18-55mm Lens is perfect for anyone who is starting a career in photography. The 14.2-megapixel APS-size CCD image sensor for ultra-fine detail includes a SAL1855 18-55mm standard zoom lens. Then it features a SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization; Eye-Start Autofocus with tiltable, 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus display and it is compatible with high-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media.

One advantage the Sony Alphas have over every other camera is the in body stabilization. That simply means that even if you are using a 25 year old Minolta "A" mount lens or the latest lens released by Sony the lens mounted on your camera is a stabilized lens. The only way to get a stabilized lens in Nikon or Canon is to purchase the new expensive stabilized lenses. Every single Minolta Maxxum and almost every third party lens made in the Minolta "A" mount will auto focus, have auto aperture control and will be stabilized when mounted on a Sony Alpha body.
The A390 has replaced the A380, it is priced right around the A380.
Here is a kink to DPReviews just releasted review of the A390
