How does the Nikon D7000 compare with the D3100?

I know one's a prosumer DSLR and the other entry level, but I want to know how they compare to each other, because I'm majoring in photography and want a good DSLR, that's also capable of recording great video. I recently encountered a budget problem, so i just wanted to know how the overall performance of both DSLRs compare to each other

The D7000 can use many of the legacy lenses like the older AF and AI manual lenses as well as the newer AF-S lenses.
The D3100 only auto-focuses when using the newer AF-S
The sensor on the D7000 is more advanced in its performance as you will notice on this link

In addition, the D7000 is a more robust camera. If you visit a camera store and hold both in your hands, you will see what I mean.
If this is your first dSLR, owning a D3100 for four to five years while you learn how to use a fully adjustable camera will not in any way reduce the rate at which you learn the fundamentals of photography.
