How does nikon do their serial numbering?

Like I buy a D7000 when it is released. Would it be like D7000_544
or maybe just a number like 0000544
Or is it just random and not production number?

One of my D200's serial number is 3022200. One of the D300's serial number is 3065583

Do you get any sequence from those?

On a lot of models the first digit will tell you which market it is intended for. At least, that was the story that always went round but it could be an urban legend.

2 - Japan
3 - USA
4 - Europe (excluding UK)
5 - Canada
6 - Australia / New Zealand(?)
7 - Asia (excluding Japan)
8 - UK
