How to autofocus on nikon d3000?

I have a nikon d3000 and sigma 50mm DG Macro lens. When I try to activate any auto focus mode it says that the wrong settings are activated. What should I change so I can autofocus because when I zoom in any more then like 1:5 its blurry and nothing helps, not aperture or shutter speed.

Does your lens have an autofocus motor? AF-S type? If not, it has no autofocus.

I reckon not.

This type of question really, really upsets me. It's not your fault, but too many people here at and other sites love to recommend Nikon dSLRs, and never, ever tell the potential buyers that Nikon does not put auto focus motors in their entry level bodies like the d3000, 3100, 5100, d40 etc. Not all lenses have motors, and when both meet, you get manual focus only lenses.

I'm not familiar with the lens you mention, but if it has no motor, well you have your answer. This problem does not exist with Canon, Sony Alpha.mid range and pro body Nikons have the motor. Nikon cuts out the motor to save money, but if you ask me, it's just a giant headache for people that are buying their first dSLR since most will go for the entry level models.

Just be aware that for entry level Nikons like yours, you need a Nikon Af-S lens or a Sigma HSM lens.
In fact, here's a full list of lenses that will autofocus on your camera.

Incidently, though there are those who bash Nikon for not having autofocus motors in their entry level bodies, requiring you to get lenses with the AF motors within, please note that 100% of the Canon DSLR's don't have autofocus motors in the bodies and require the same in their lenses.
