How to use a 52mm IR Infrared Pass 950nm Standard Filter?
Recently I bought an IR Filter instead of a cut out filter for long exposure. I'd like to know how I'm to use this, and what it's for rather than it just sitting around my room. I have a Nikon D5100 with an okay understanding of photography, if someone could tell me how I'm to set up this camera with the filter attached and get decent photos, I would very much appreciate it.
Ir filters give you some pretty cool nature shots. Try taking pictures of nature in black and whitE
The IR filter will not work on your camera, because there's a filter over the sensor the blocks IR light. The filter you have is meant to block everything but IR light. When both are in place all the light will be blocked.
In order to successfully use this filter on a digital camera, you need to remove the IR/UV cut-off filter from the sensor, and replace it with one that allows IR light to pass through. You can get a conversion kit from http://www.lifepixel.com for about $100, if you are willing to do some major surgery on your camera. Or you can have them convert it for you for around $400. Once you do the conversion, your camera will not be able to take normal visible light photos any more.
Here are examples from my converted camera:
