That feature is called "live view" and I don't believe your camera has it. But, refer to your owner's manual, if you've got one. If you don't have go to the Nikon site and you can download a manual
in pdf.

In the mean time I'd suggest if you're going to have a dslr you should learn how to use it. Part of that is using the view finder - that's what it's for.

You will need to read the manual or go to Nikon and download it. If liveview is possible with that camera, the manual will explain how. Www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D40X_e…

Things to consider though:

1) using liveview will use more battery power
2) it will increase blur, since you will be holding the camera (2 to 4+ pounds, depending on the lens) in front of you like a P&S camera.
3) Liveview is best used on a tripod to shoot macro shots

If you just had gotten the Camera which means You SHOULD STILL HAVE THE OWNERS MANUAL. Plus Now is the Perfect time to Start Reading the Owners Manual because something like this is actually gets explained in the Owners Manual.

Rule # 1 - Read the Owners Manual

Rule # 2 - Read the Owners Manual

Rule # 3 - Read the Owners Manual

Rule # 4 - When all Else Fails Try Reading the Owners Manual

Maybe You Really Should Learn How to Use the Camera As It Was Intended To Be Used. As In Using the View Finder as Opposed to the Live View because You Would Practically be Using the Camera Almost Exactly Like a Point And Shoot.

If you hold a DSLR out in front of you like a point & shoot, people are going to laugh at you because you will look like you don't know what you are doing. Read your manual, and get acquainted with your new camera. Get used to using the viewfinder because it will take better pictures---you will be bracing it against your face, so it won't wobble.

Using the lcd screen eats up the battery, and it is only to be used for taking close ups with a tripod. Learn to use the camera the proper way, and you will soon be taking much better shots.

a simply nice answer would have been great instead of demanding to read the manual. Just saying.
