How to set my nikon d40 for 1 second exposure?

Magazine tell me the settings but no-one explains how to get my camera onto those settings. I love results so please help!

Put it in S-mode on the top dial. Use the thumb dial to adjust the shutter speed until you see 1".

See pages 39 and 41 in your manual. You are looking for "shutter priority". You may also be interested in manual setting discussed on page 43.
