How to print a picture that looks the same at different sizes?
I'm a newbie photographer and have recently purchased the Nikon D5000. I have started printing a lot of pictures but one issue I'm having is that when I edit the picture to how I want it, it gets cropped more while getting printed or if I ordered different sizes it gets cropped differently. What do I need to do so that the image in the picture looks the same whether it be a 4x6 or 11x14?
One: your resolution needs to remain the same. If you enlarge an image when editing it, it is not going to look as good. Also you have to be aware of the proportions. A 4 x 6 shot is not proportional to 11 x 14: if you double the size of a 4 x 6 it's 8 x 12, if you triple it, it's 12 x 18.So you will get different cropped effects. Also it depends on your printer; you have to be aware of the printer's required margins (not all printers can print edge to edge).
When you order different sizes it's the same thing: the photo print service will have standard sizes they crop to if needed, so if you send them an 8 x 12 image, but their standard size is 8 x 10, then it is going to get cropped. Otherwise the image will be distorted in at least one dimension.
You are talking about two different paper size perspectives, 4x6 enlarged should be 11x16.5.To get them to look the same, you need to print with a border, then you would have an image 9.33 x 14, and it would look same as 4x6.
I prefer to print myself, with Epson 13x19 paper. It is real colse to original, 13x19.5 would be full size.
If you're printing 4x6, it's cheaper to go to labs. At 5x7 and larger, cheaper to print at home.
