How do I make the screen the viewfinder on my Nikon D5000?

You don't. You look through the view finder on a DSLR. If you can't handle that, sell your DSLR and buy a point and shoot.

Search up live-view in the index of your manual.
Keep in mind that live-view is best used on a tripod for shooting things that don't move. It's great for checking critical focus. If you're shooting things that do move, prepare to be disappointed by appallingly slow autofocus that will drive you mad.
