How to adjust a Nikon D70 Shutter Speed to the Fastest Possible?
I just got a used Nikon D70, this is my first DSLR and boy am I lost! It didn't come with a manual, so i'm Really lost! And yes, I'm a TOTAL begginer, I just wanted a decent camera to play with. I want to adjust the shutter speed to the fastest possible. I think i have to set the rotating piece on the left to either M, S or P, but after that i'm pretty much lost. What number on the eye viewfinder should it be set to so that it can be at its fastest?
And I know this second question is off topic, but if you know it, please, kindly answer it too. I have the Nikkor 18-70mm lens, is there a special setting that i should use for the pictures to come out brighter when i'm shooting indoors? Thanks so much in advance for any help! MUCH appreciated!

Until you learn a few basics, just use the camera on auto or program. (The P button is Program, A is aperture priority, S is shutter priority, and M is manual.)

I have called Nikon Tech Support from locations where I had to figure out how to do tricky stuff (multiple exposures in one case). They figured out that the Nikon N90 I was trying to use did not have that feature, but an older one (N8008) I also had with me could do it… AND they talked me through how to do it. Saved the shoot, and I got exactly what I was looking for.
For the fastest shutter speed, put it on either "M" or "S" and then rotate the wheel on the back of the camera with your thumb to change the shutter speeds. Keep going until you get the biggest number. With the D70 it is probably 2000, which would mean 1/2, 000th of a second.
To make pictures brighter indoors by changing the setting on the lens, select either "M" or "A" and turn the wheel on the front of the camera to find the smallest number, which would be the largest aperture. Depending on whether you are at 18mm or 70mm, it will be either 3.5 or 4.5. If it's somewhere between 18mm and 70mm, the largest aperture will be somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5.
You need to download the manual and get a copy of some sort of photography for beginners.
