How to do this on my camera?

For Christmas I got a nikon d3000, I always see people taking pictures like this and I have no idea how. How do you take these picures?

You need to put your camera on a tripod and use a long shutter speed on the manual setting. Look up shutter speed in your owner's manual. Better yet, read the entire owner's manual and learn how to actually use a DSLR.

Those are simple light paintings. Basically take a flashlight while you have the shutter open for 10 or more seconds and wave it around. I think that person used flash when doing it so you could see him.
