Help regarding choice of my 1st DSLR?
I'll be buying my 1st DSLR shortly. Given the type of photography I pursue(landscape, cityscape, wildlife, bird… And my budget I have got two choices with me
1. Nikon D3100 with a 18-55 lens and a 70-300 lens
2. Canon EOS 1100D with a 18-55 lens and a 55-250 lens.
Which one should I opt for? Please do help me.
Nikon, because nikons more for photography while canon is geared towards videography.
Nikon just officially announced the D3200 which replaces the D3100.So compare the Canon camera to the D3200. Amazon, Adorama, and others have them listed for pre-order.
On the other hand, the D3100 will likely be discounted at some point to move stock.
Both cameras are great choices for 1st DSLR. I'm well aware of the Nikon-Canon aficionado battle, but IMHO there's no real winner, it all comes down to individual preference, and possibly some detail or feature that will appeal to some, but not to others. I've extensively used both Nion and Canon products and both brands offer excellent cameras (and service). However, choosing for one brand means that you'll have to invest in lenses made for that particular label. If you want to switch brands, you'll also have to trade in your lenses, not just the body of course.
A -sort-of- unbiased comparison of the feature sets of these two cameras, puts the D3100 on top. It's an excellent camerra, very soon to be replaced though by the 24 megapixel D3200 (approx.US $ 699 with 18-55 mm kit lens), and capable of attaching a Wi-Fi transmitter thingy to send pics to your smartphone. If that's important to you, wait a few weeks, if not, see if there are clearance sales of the D3100.
I'm not aware of any Canon upgrades/replacements for the 1100D in the near future. Anyways, either way, you can't go wrong. Happy shooting.
Firstly, WHY A DSLR?
if you are new to photography, you might want to save money and look at a bridge camera…
fuji HS20, canon SX40, nikon P500
They are both excellent but the only way to choose is to go to a dealer and try each one.
My personal preference is Canon - but others (maybe including you) don't like Canon but prefer Nikon or Sony or Pentax.
I repeat - the only way is to try them!
Both Canon and Nikon make nice cameras. The best thing to do is visit an actual camera shop (not bestbuy/walmart) and try the different models within your budget to see which feels the best to you. I bought a Canon for its ergonomics/feel/menu and control layout and a fellow photog chose Nikon for the same reason… It is about personal preference.
The one thing to remember is to budget in extra money to cover an extra battery, memory cards, camera case, a USB memory card reader, and taxes (these can add another $200-$250 to the entry level camera price).
Also, most camera shops offer free beginner camera/photography classes (and free prints) when you buy a camera there.
My thoughts on photography/cameras…
1) Photography is roughly 70% photographer skill/experience, 20% lens quality, and 10% camera body
2) I would rather have a $600 camera with a $1, 500 lens than I would a $1, 800 camera and a $300 lens
Go to a camera store, get hold of both cameras, and try them out. Get the one you like the most.
Both are great cameras, sorry but I don't do mindless brand loyalty. Plus there are other manufacturers of DSLRs - don't discount them either.

Well Nikon just announced the D3200. Wait a little while and get the new one or see how much the D3100 drops in price.
